GSPic1AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY
GIRLS STATE

A week that shapes a lifetime!

Girls State is a citizenship education program sponsored by
the American Legion Auxiliary open to junior girls in high school. Its purpose is to educate young women in the privileges, rights
and duties of American citizenship in order to grasp an understanding of the responsibilities they will
assume as adults. Girls State is a positive and tangible program in Americanism.

Each year Girls State will become a mythical state and function according to the laws and procedures
of the State of Arizona. The delegates will institute their own city, county and state government by
electing their officials in the manner prescribed by regular election procedures. As duly elected officials
they will assume the same duties as office holders in everyday world, and observe the problems of government and the demands of an enlightened citizen. The girls will live as self-governing citizens
with adult supervision during the full period of Girls State.

Girls State personnel is in attendance throughout the entire session. The delegates will be supervised by capable women and counselors and will not be permitted to leave a designated area except in cases of
extreme emergency.

Any girl found guilty of leaving a designated area, except with permission of the Girls State Director, or of misconduct will be subject to immediate dismissal without refund of fees and school notified of girl’s action.
