In Memory of Thomas Murray
Despite his determination to overcome leukemia, Post 42
member Tom Murray sustained a brain hemorrhage on
Wednesday, April 8, 2009, leaving this world at that time.
With family & friends arriving from out of the area, including
as far away as South America, Tom's family elected to hold an
impromptu memorial service Sunday, April 12, at 11:00 a.m.,
at Tom & Dianne's home in Ash Fork. Tom was a longtime
friend of Buford Belgard. Because Tom sold his flagstone
quarry business prior to discovering he had leukemia, he had
no income for the past 9 months that included 6 months of
hospitalization. Consequently, Post 42's E-Board agreed to
pay for Tom's cremation. Dianne later shared the following:
Just days before his death Tom received our April newsletter; upon reading our words of encouragement, along with his expression of thanks that he had asked us to convey to
members, he was overcome with tears of joy. Although Tom
had been a member of our American Legion for quite some
time, he never realized it was such a caring organization.

Grand Canyon Pioneer Cemetery
Memorial Day Service starts at the gate with the color guard then leading the procession to the back of the cemetery where our John Ivens Memorial is located.
Long known as The American Legion Cemetery and it's no
wonder. Our Legion had a major influence in the early history
of residents of Grand Canyon; Post 42 was instrumental in
sponsoring and promoting many exciting and fun community
events and fundraiser's at Grand Canyon Village and Tusayan,
along with providing veterans assistance, memorial services,
and annual Memorial Day ceremonies. the gate to the
cemetery was a project of our post and was dedicated
Memorial Day of 1928. Cost of the original gate structure
was $173.60; however, when the structure had to be rebuilt
in early 2000 due to deterioration of the logs, the new
structure cost over $6,000! Rededication of the gate was
Memorial Day 2003. While the official name is Grand Canyon
Pioneer Cemetery, it is also known as South Rim Cemetery
or Grand Canyon Cemetery.
ALLECA/Boys State/Girls State
No Grand Canyon Delegates for 09
What Happened and Why
When Post 42 did initial presentations on ALLECA/Boys
State/Girls State tot he GCHS Junior class on 9/11/2009,
the enthusiasm was impressive - not only from students,
but also from the teacher and Elizabeth Davis, School
Counselor. One student expressed interest in ALLECA and
two girls were enthusiastic about Girls State (guys just
shyly smiled when asked about Boys Sate & ALLECA).
We were invited to return for follow-up in late January to
assist students in the enrollment process. while the school
received info packets with applications in early 2009, these
were set aside by staff. Reason: when the school closed early
in December because of snow, final exams and other school
projects were postponed till January - naturally these took
priority over our programs. But, according to GCHS, even
more important in their decision not to pursue our programs
this year were problems relating to the students
themselves - very significant problems. GCHS suggested
we try again next year.
Correction and Reminder
(April 2009 Newsletter)
Regarding post Consolidated Reports, we were advised by
the American LEgion Dept. of AZ that dates covered may
differ from post's fiscal year. Applicable dates for Consolidated
Reports are May 1 of previous year to May 1 of current year.
Post Consolidated Reports must be sent to Department no
later than May 15, so they can forward these to National.
Therefore, please submit your voluntary service, community
service, donations, etc. covering May 1, 2008 to May 1, 2009
to Dick & Maggie Patton as soon as possible so they can
include in post reports. Our info is important; it's proof the
American Legion is doing its part to help others while saving
the government $$ that would otherwise have to be paid to
others to do what we do free - plus this gives the Legion a
greater voice in Congress.
